Health cost

The single greatest cause of preventable illnesses and early death is caused by tobacco consumption or better known as smoking. Cancer Research UK estimates that 114,000 people die each year from smoking related diseases including cancer. Smokers find it extremely difficult to give up smoking due to the highly addictive nature of nicotine in cigarettes.

What a waste of money

The cost of a single person smoking twenty cigarettes a day is £2,135 per year and this takes no account of the income tax and the national insurance you paid to the government from your wages. If these taxes were included then a twenty a day single persons smoking habit would cost you £2,669 per year. That’s the cost of a family holiday abroad including spending money. A couple smoking twenty cigarettes a day would spend £5,338 per year including tax deductions from their wages. That’s £102.66 per week for a couple and £51.33 for a single smoker. What a waste of money!

What are the benefits of not smoking?

  • You would save on average £2,135 per year and even more if your partner smokes as well.
  • Your clothes and your home would smell fresher
  • You will reduce the risk of developing illness, disability or death caused through cancer, heart or lung disease.
  • You family would not be exposed to your second-hand smoke
  • Your general fitness would improve and you’re breathing.
  • You would reduce the chances of you or your children suffering from Asthma
  • Your food would taste better
  • You would no longer smell like an old ashtray
  • Your general appearance would improve almost immediately

Stop Smoking Today!

Stop Smoking Today!

I stopped back over eighteen months ago when my wife and I decided that thirty years was long enough and we decided to stop smoking together. We have provided each other with support and encouragement. Before this momentous decision we had tried and failed but this time it was different we wanted to give up for health and financial reasons. We wanted to save cash and hopefully live longer and healthier lives. Our three children wanted us to stop as well because they smelt of our smoke.

We went to a Tesco Pharmacy store and asked to see their NHS smokefree representative. The first thing they did was ask us some health questions then they asked us to blow into a machine that recorded the carbon dioxide in our lungs. We were given a week’s course of Nicotine replacement patches to help us resist smoking. It was hard to pack in but we preserved and after six weeks we had stopped.

Eighteen months later neither of us has smoked a single cigarette and yes I could smoke a cigarette everyday but I know how hard it was and the willpower it took to give them up.

The best part of giving up smoking was the money we were saving although I have to say I have never seen the money we are saving. We both feel healthier and our children don’t smell like an old ashtray. If I can give it up then anyone can.  Your thoughts, experiences and comments are welcome. You can join the discussion below and leave your thoughts and experiences.NHS Quit smoking advert 2008- Jungle Book

Smoking is not addictive. I should know, I’ve been smoking for years. LOL

That was a quote I read somewhere but it’s about heroin I guess or something addictive. Seriously, I agree with you that giving up smoking takes a lot of willpower. BUT, it is possible and you as well as hundred of people have proven it can be done. To anyone looking to give up smoking, just believe that you can quit and tell the people around you that you are planning to quit so that they can help you beat the urge to light up even one.

Smokers deserve our support as they try to quit. It is difficult to overcome the physical and psychological addictions to smoking without the proper help. Most programs deal only with the physical cravings and that is why they have such a low success rate.

Completely quitting smoking can nearly serve you as a PAY rise..with an average of around 2k us dollars spent on smoking..for many this can add nicely to their bottom-line if they decide to take any efforts..

Electronic cigarettes are quickly becoming the hottest trend for 2009. Traditional cigarette smoking has too many hazardous chemicals and sixty-nine of them are proven to cause cancer. the SMOKeFREE electronic cigarette is the first all-natural electronic cigarette produced with a proprietary non-nicotine based solution. The solution, Gykuro Mist, is a green tea derived solution that imitates smoking nicotine only without the harmful side-effects.

    hi there,
I love the idea of thinking of it as a pay raise, but totally disagree with the concept that it takes will power.
There are two components of smoking the physical addiction and the psycological addiction, it is not understanding these components that makes it difficult. Preparing your mind is the key to quiting easily.
If you stop smoking but have prepared your mind and removed the obstacles it is very hard Yes.
Because stoping smoking doesnt stop you wanting one does it.
Preparation and understanding of the situation makes it easy to quit it is like taking a board rubber and wiping out the problems then its easy. If you 100% knew for a fact that if you put it in your mouth it would kill you immediatly you would never do it. The trouble is wrapped up with so many false beliefs that need to be removed before you quit i hope this helps, there is an easy way to quit smoking when you understand it then you can save your money for better things like life.

Everyone should take action now especially if you’re a chain smoker. This vice could take you to your death bed like my father…

Somehow poor people always seem to have money for smokes. I bet if more people managed to stop smoking they would suffer a lot less from poverty. I guess it can be a way to hide their problems but a good meal would be better then I think.

Me and my partner were both smokers, but when she fell pregnant it made us both give up. I just kept thinking about my baby and that I want to be there for them as long as I can so why smoke?? I found it very hard in the past to give up and im not saying to have a baby to make you give up but thats what worked for me! Have saved soo much money to.
